MOVIE REVIEW: St Louis Blues * 1958

For anyone who loves the blues as much as I do, or is just venturing into this truly American art form for the first time, this is a great movie.

In this film, the main character is torn between his fathers' devotion to the spiritual music of the church and his own new found love of negro music, which was basically share cropper songs played on old guitars and banjos.

This main character is W.C. Handy performed by the last great Nat King Cole.

The film is based on Handy's life and career as a songwriter. The story takes place after he was educated and moved back home to Memphis, Tennessee. When travelling, he discovered the rural music of the southern people and their haunting repetitive passion for 12 bars on the guitar and the key of G.

Those influences inspired Handy to make his own music and the rest if history. The cast of jazz and blues legends, the singing, the music - together aids an an entertaining yet educational experience!

Watch the film and enjoy!

VIDEO & MP3 SUBMITTED BY LOS ANGELES "SWAMP" BLUES BASSIST

"Build it and They Shall Come" was the motto while I was constructing this webzine and it seems that this old Biblical saying is coming true blue.

Meet Anthony Cook, bass player for  the BLACK TONGUED BELLS out of Los Angeles, California. Believe it or not, he has been a subscriber of CBBlues.com since the early days. He has a love of Spain and wishes to visit our Mediterranean coast one day in the future. Let's hope he does and we can get him to perform for us!!

VIDEO:
Anthony has submitted a video for our enjoyment. It is called Midnight Porter and is actually sung by one of the bands' back up gospel singers named Louis Cox.
The song is bluesy and devilish in a way that only the blues can be. According to Anthony, " It is one of the favorites when we play live." "It was done by one of our music industry friends in New Zealand"

JUKEBOX
Anthony has also submitted two fantastic, wild and stylish songs for the CBBlues JukeBox - FREE to download!!
They are both sung by the bands lead vocalist and songwriter named D. Miner. Check out the gravel and grit in his voice! VISIT the JUKEBOX

MORE PHOTOS OF MOJO PARTY

It was hard to sort through the 100 or so photos that came in from Bryn Slack, Rien van der Kolk and of course my photos. I have made some collages of the photos that are entertaining. You might even see yourself :)

Congratulations to all who won prizes, especially Reg Den Hartog who attends many of our parties but never wins anything. This event he won several prizes including a special gift from Austin Slack - a Ukulele signed by each member of the One Stop Blues Band.

Also, the baby in the photo is our youngest guest. He was in his mother's tummy at our 1st Mojo party and he was in perfect health and cheer at this years event. He has the blues vibe in his spirit now!!

Enjoy the photos - just click to launch the photo viewer.

2ND ANNIVERSARY "MOJO PARTY" SERVES UP A SENSATIONAL AFTERNOON OF BLUES MAGIC

On the 11th of May, 2014 - The Bar Mediterraneo of Teulada, was turned into a Sunday social "juke joint" where the hoodoo vibrations of traditional and Spanish-inspired blues music was casting its positive effects on all who were ready to feel the magic.

CBBlues.com invited all of its webzine subscribers as well and private and neighbourhood friends of editor, Karla Darocas and the music director, Tom Poole.

The CBBlues Sunday social and matinee show served up a Mojo menu prepared by Bar Mediterraneo husband and wife team - Luis and Rocio. The CBBlues barrelhouse rolled into action with an acoustic opening set by Tom Poole. There was a small sound problem that was ironed out quickly due to the excellent crowd participation. Thank You.

Tom's friend, Verde Maria was on call to offer some traditional Spanish dance and to get the hoodoo spell working into the room  More musicians from the Stop Blues Band were added to the set until finally, the young guitarist, the 14 year old axeman - Austin Slack from Murcia - was introduced. Together, they kept the mojo working.

Then, the CBBlues Mojo-Man of the year, award winning singer / songwriter - Emilio Martinez Chicheri took the stage and the microphone. He brought the mojo energy to a frenzy of shaking and shuffling as the dance floor rocked to the rhythms.

The raffle saw many gifts of wine from Casa del Vino in Javea, CD's from groups in Murcia, a black band tshirt from Austin Slack and an ukulele, which all the visiting band members autographed.

As you can imagine, there are hundreds of photos to go through and sort out.
In the meantime, enjoy the video below;)

We have more shows in the works :)
