TRIBUTE TO JOHN CAMPBELL * A Hot Blues Flame Extinguished to Soon

JOHN CAMPBELL
Born: January 20, 1952 in Shreveport, Louisiana
Died: June 13, 1993 in New York, New York

* tribute by WilfRaydo for CBBlues.com

Singer, songwriter, and blues guitarist John Campbell was pegged by many to be the next big guitar hero of the blues in the wake of the death of the great Stevie Ray Vaughan.

A fiery player with a unique sound, Campbell was also an extraordinary vocalist and an imaginative songwriter that brought great power and emotion to his performances. Tragically, Campbell was destined to die young, suffering a heart attack in his sleep and passing away at the age of 41 years old.

OCTOBER WAS BEST COFFEE HOUSE EVER!

click photo to enlarge
Okay - it was only our 2nd Coffee House ever, but it was still the best so far!

We had great fun and lots of variety with music, poetry, singing, dancing and story telling.

I painted a raffle prize that was themed to the spirit of the Coffee House tradition.

We were blown away by the talent that came out to showcase and share with us.

I didn't get all of it on film - but I managed to capture a "feeling".

Once again - thank you to Tom Poole and Ray Wilcox for hosting and being very encouraging to the "shy" people who are obviously creative but need a "gentle" push to get up to the microphone :)

LAST SATURDAY MORNING OF THE MONTH
11:00 START - then we usually hang around for lunch and meet and greet new folks. It is all good!! We Keep it Real - karla

CBBlues IS FRONT PAGE NEWS

Everyone was so surprised when our local community English language newspaper came out this week!

Yes, our Sunday CBBlues matinee made the front page.

You can read our review and you can know what our guests thought but to see it reviewed by a reporter that has no affiliation with us - is different.

It confirms that we are indeed moving in a positive direction and we are making our niche in the world.

Thanks again to everyone who helps me to make this dream come true :)

2ND ANNUAL BOOKS & BLUES FEST - BLUES MATINEE with DANNY BOY

What a show!!

The CBBlues Matinee featured Spain's 30 year veteran blues harmonica king - Danny Boy Sanchez (member of the Valencia Blues Society). I have seen and hear the best in Blues harmonica players from the USA and Canada but Danny Boy was my first blues harmonica experience in Spain.

Danny Boy commanded the band like an orchestra leader. He took the players - whom he had never met before - into big introductions, softer features and solos and rounded up each song with the big blues finales like the bad blues acts from Chicago.

All of the positive accolades that I had heard from radio hosts and reviewers were all true. He is without a doubt the King!

He can master all the unique techniques that you hear in the likes of Sonny Boy Williamson and ** . He was slurring and bending notes, tongue blocking and lip pursing like the pro that he is.

I was extremely please to capture one of the most iconic moment in our CBBlues history on video.

In one clip I was able to capture both the blues roots phenomenon of the "call and response" tradition and the train to freedom tradition.

2ND ANNUAL BOOKS & BLUES FESTIVAL 2014 - LITERARY MORNING

Report by Karla Darocas

Authors * Jana Petken & Ray Wilcox
BOOKS - LITERARY MORNING

The weather on the Costa Blanca was as perfect as a picture for the fans who turned out on October 19th Sunday at the CBBlues main headquarters in Teulada at Bar Mediterraneo.

It was the ultimate of literary mingle and mix with books, authors, writers and publishers. The networking opportunities were dedicated people of the page. I overheard publishing deals being made and outlines of books still in draft being told. There were not too many "non-booky" people in attendance but it was our first literary event and we laid the groundwork and attracted the sponsors and media that we need to launch another literary event in the future.

Special guest speakers were - 2 time author Jana Petken. She told us about her books and her successes, along with some other funny tales and adventures.

First time author Ray Wilcox shared his new experiences with being an author and the learning rules of the road.

I even got to share words and tears about my e-cookbook that was transformed into a real book by UP Publications Ltd. Tears because the woman who pushed me to create the cookbook died suddenly and never saw this release!! However, I did sell out of my cookbooks and the publisher was very happy! She even won the raffle prize - one of my paintings. It was all good vibes!!

WHO IS IVAN  "SMOOTHEAD"  PETRIČIĆ?
by WilfRaydo

A couple of years ago, after watching Seasick Steve, I had a hankering for a Cigar Box Guitar (CBG)

Why ?  I can’t play guitar!

Having struggled to master 6 strings, I thought at the time, I had a better chance with 3 strings.

After trolling the Internet and contacting several CBG makers, I happened upon “Smootheads” Little Shop of Blues.

HENRY’S FUNERAL SHOE IS A GLIMPSE INTO THE FUTURE

Report & Interview by WilfRaydo for CBBlues.com

And now for something a little different……………..

PROFILE

Henry's Funeral Shoe was formed by two brothers in 2008 from South Wales, inspired and influenced by many of the albums that singer/guitarist Aled Clifford had looted from his father's vinyl collection when he was growing up. The Who, CCR, Peter Green, Robert Johnson and the Beatles were favourites, and Aled quickly became a gifted guitar player, aided and taught by Ned Edwards, a long-time collaborator of Van Morrison.
